    Welcome
Welcome to this website which is a sister site to the very successful Old Airfields website. During our travels I've found myself increasingly interested in the Cold War period and the infrastructure associated with it.

The well known "four minute warning" would have been provided by a complex organisation called United Kingdom Warning and monitoring Organisation - UKWMO. As well as other resources they used specially constructed underground monitoring posts, staffed by the Royal Observer Corp, to report on Nuclear detonations and monitor fall-out.

The underground posts had an entrance hatch above ground, from this a 20 ft vertical ladder lead to an underground chamber 7ft x 16ft x 7ft high. This housed the observers, their instruments and welfare facilities

Instruments consisted of a Ground Zero Indicator (GZI) which recorded the fireball on photographic paper via a pinhole camera. A Bomb Power Indicator (BPI) recorded the strength of the nuclear burst, and a further device, the Fixed Survey Meter (FSM) recorded fallout.

The BPI mount was on the surface as was the FSM. The final surface feature was the ventilation shaft.

Over 1500 of these posts were constructed and it is with the intention of preserving these photographically that this site was set up.

I claim to be no expert on these and welcome any corrections, comments or further information.

    DISCLAIMER

The underground ROC posts and similar installations are dangerous places. DO NOT enter these bunkers without permission and certainly not when alone. Most of the posts are on private land, as such permission must always be sought beforehand. This website and owners accept no responsibility or condone acts of trespass and or damage to property or persons. The fact that photos of the posts appear does in no way infer that they are accessible.
